Wei Kwan's biodata

Wei Kwan is currently a NUS final year undergraduate majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Offshore Oil and Gas Technology. Due to his keen interest in the Marine industry, he has taken on projects and internships related to the industry to gain more exposure. Beside the academic realm, Wei Kwan is also an active participant in various cultural activities such as performing as an electric guitarist with his band, writing songs and singing in a choir. He has written songs for a hall theatrical production and showcased his songs on the ExxonMobil Campus Concerts. He enjoys listening to music, investing and reading in his free time.

Dear Wei Kwan,

INTERESTING! I would really like to listen to your productions. Your biodata has really followed the KISS technique -- Keeping It Short and Simple and has encompassed all the necessary elements! Great job.

Hi Wei Kwan,

As a biology student, the phrase "marine industry" reminds me of fishery and diving etc. Are you referring to work related to offshore oil? How is that marine except for the fact that it is offshore?(Sorry if I sound stupid =P)

Yes I agree with Tiffany, it will be REALLY interesting to listen to your productions! Perhaps you should do it on our last tutorial =).

Hi Oxy,

Don't worry. I was also confused like you until I came to varsity.

Oil and gas are located beneath the surface of the earth. Nowadays, it is found in the oceans and seas, since the known oil and gas on land have been discovered and is in production already. To retrieve the oil and gas from such offshore locations, one will need a floating platform to drill deep into the earth.

There are many different types of such floating platforms and they include jackup rigs, semi-submersibles and FPSO. The building of such platforms are usually done in shipyards. So that's where the link comes from ! :) In short, the marine industry constructs offshore platforms so we tend to term this industry as the offshore and marine industry.

I think quite sometime ago, there was a drama serial in channel 8 which I think is called 'The Peak' and it starred Christopher Lee and Dawn Yeo. Basically, the drama serial is shot one of the Keppel's shipyard so if you seen this show, it will be a pretty good illustration of what this industry is about :)

Hi Tiffany,

Thanks for your compliment. It was really tough trying to squeeze everything into around 100 words only :D

I think I didn't express myself clearly. The theatrical production was a production done by Kent Ridge Hall which was the hall I stayed in previously. Those songs I wrote are quite melancholic and pop in nature so I think the standard is quite far from those theatrical production kind of genre. I still cringe when I listened to those recordings :)

Dear Wei Kwan,

So are you the next Jay Chou or Lee-Hom? Heehee.. Anyway, your biodata is short yet interesting! It has given me the impression that you are an active individual who takes the initiative to equip yourself with relevant experience in the industry that you plan to work in.

Dear Joyce,

I wish I was Jay Chou though :D I just have to concentrate on making music and doing some magic tricks every now and then.

I guess I did not really purposely plan to equip myself with the relevant experience in this industry although I did had the intention. I wanted to see if this industry is suitable for me and I guess that the best way to check is by taking up related internships and projects. So far, it's been fine with me though I have seen some of the uglier aspects of this industry. Well, given the current economic turmoil, I guess I don't have much of a choice too :)

Hey Wei Kwan,

I'm just curious is offshore oil and gas, is that like the petroleum industry?

I agree with Joyce that your biodata is very interesting. I didn't know you write songs! Do share your songs with me during our next meeting. (:

Hi Huixuan,

Generally, the petroleum industry is the same as the oil and gas industry and it is also closely linked to the offshore and marine industry. The entire process of retrieving oil and gas from the earth can be divided into the upstream and downstream categories. I think the oil and gas industry refers more to the upstream sector i.e retrieving oil and gas from the earth and transporting it to the refineries. The petroleum industry refers more to the downstream sector where the refineries convert the crude oil and gas into useful products such as petrol and diesel.

I think there is not much distinction between the petroleum and oil and gas industry. I noticed that in online job portals, these terms are used interchangeably.

Well, if we still have the chance to have a meeting in my house, I can share my songs with you if u wish :)

Hey Wei Kwan,

Thanks for explaining to me about my query. (:

Hi Wei Kwan,

I have a very simple question that has been bugging me especially since I read your resume. Question is, why oil and gas? What intrigues you about this industry?

Wei Kwan said...

Hi Tiffany,

There are quite a lot of reasons behind it :)

I have always been fascinated by large structures such as ships and skyscrapers. I often wonder how can ships which are as long as the length of two to three football fields are able to float in the oceans and the details that goes in to build them thus it has always been my desire to enter into this industry.

Furthermore, I relish the challenge of building such structures. The building of ships and oil rigs is a very daunting task and involves all the traditional domains of engineering such as mechanical, electrical and civil engineering. This is because such structures can are basically floating mini-cities which can cost a few hundred millions each and takes as long as two years to build it. Beside the engineering aspects, building such structures also involves project management and this is one area which I am particularly interested in as this covers a wide range of skills such as coordination and planning and cost control.

Frankly speaking, this industry is very established and it pays very well too. Singapore is one of the major oil and gas hubs in the world besides Aberdeen and Houston. Furthermore, Singapore is the world leader in building oil rigs and semi-submersibles and local companies such as Keppel and Sembcorp Marine currently builds about 80% of all the oil rigs and semi-submersibles in the world. Moreover, many MNCs have made Singapore as the location of their Asia-Pacific headquarters.

Lastly, I have seen and experienced the bad aspects of working in this industry such as a lousy and uncomfortable working environment and I am okay with it so I guess it will be fine for me to choose this industry :)

This is very clear and concise, and at the same time, interesting. I would only ask you to expand the part about your internships by a sentence or two. That would give more balance between academic and non-academic (which is important, too!) and make this an excellent professional bio.

Hey, do you have a myspace page with your music? I'd like ti check that out.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for your suggestion for my bio. I will bear that in mind :)

I don't have a myspace page but if you wish, maybe I can sent you a copy of my music :)
